Designer Abandonment
Designer cro
73.4% of users who enter the designer tool never add an item to cart. 5,900 users abandon during the design process. This is the largest absolute user loss in the entire funnel. Session recordings reveal warning dialogs interrupting the flow, iframe-based preview blocking Hotjar tracking, and mobile users struggling with a multi-step wizard interface.
Evidence
- 7,100 users view the designer but only 1,800 reach /cart (25.7% proceed)
- 5,300 users lost between designer and cart — largest absolute drop-off
- Safari shows 24.2% designer-to-cart vs Chrome 25.8%, suggesting UX issues across all browsers
- 8,196 recordings in 30 days show users entering the designer — majority exit without adding to cart
- Warning dialogs (warningCtrlContainer / ui-warning-message) interrupt users mid-design on mobile
- Designer preview/add-to-basket step uses an iframe that Hotjar cannot track — blind spot in analytics
- Desktop: 'Edit product' panel with Add Name / Add Image / Add Dates steps — users complete fields but abandon before 'Preview & Add to Basket'
- Mobile: step-based wizard (Step > Add Name > fields > Next) with small navigation — users frequently resize windows suggesting layout issues

A/B Test Hypothesis
Adding progress indicators, save-for-later functionality, and simplifying the designer UI will reduce abandonment by 20%. Removing or suppressing warning dialogs during design flow, and fixing the iframe tracking gap, will improve measurement accuracy and likely improve conversion.
